From the Father unto the Son - The Differences between the Star of David and the Seal of Solomon

HEXAGRAM ON LEFT: The Star of David --- HEXAGRAM ON RIGHT: The Seal of Solomon

According to legend, King Solomon supposedly took the rather simple, two-dimensional Star of David he inherited from his Royal father and managed to improve upon it by having the two opposite triangles appear as if they were interwoven with one another. A rather interesting take on the very real differences between the Star of David and the Seal of Solomon reads as follows:
______________________________________________

Uniting the Water Triangle [facing downwards] with the Fire Triangle [facing upwards], the Hexagram is formed. It forms a six pointed star also known as the Seal of Solomon. This symbol is a [different type of] Star of David, the national symbol of Israel (God's chosen nation). The difference between the Star of David and the seal [of Solomon] is the triangles which make up the seal [Solomon] interlock and the two triangles of the Star of David lie flat against each other.

- Hexagram, TheForbiddenKnowledge.com
______________________________________________

The traditional understanding that the Star of David and the Seal of Solomon have fundamental differences in both their origins and visual appearances, seems to have been nearly lost in modern times. What's most frustrating is that more a few modern dictionaries have gotten the fundamental differences between these two distinct types of hexagrams completely wrong, thus misleading everybody. Some of them have even gone so far as to ignorantly claim the Seal of Solomon is actually a five-pointed pentagram instead, of a hexagram.

Solomon's Seal is also a name for a species of plant
The biggest visual clue in telling the difference between the two, starts with the way the Seal of Solomon's triangular lines look like they are either above or beneath one another without ever truly touching or intersecting. Apparently, this was never the case with the Star of David. To be specific, King David used the symbol as a short form of his written signature and as a battle insignia painted on the shields of his fellow Israelite soldiers. In both cases, the iconographic complexity seen in the Seal of Solomon was never really needed and therefore never developed. In contrast, the Seal of Solomon was thought to have been an actual Royal Seal used throughout King Solomon's reign, a hand-held device which stamped an image upon either a puddle of wax, or clay, or even a form of paper made with animal skins. Even back then, these Seals were usually custom-made by professional artists and were therefore far more complex in appearance than any written signature or hand-drawn war emblem.

In all honesty, however, one could cautiously state that both symbols can be viewed simply different versions of the Star of David. However, because the Seal of Solomon has always been depicted with three-dimensional, interwoven (or interlaced) triangles, the two-dimensional Star of David can never be properly referred to as a Seal of Solomon also. What is even more unfortunate is that literally no one these days really knows, or even cares, about what a Seal of Solomon actually is anyway. However, for the sake of precision, one should understand the Star of David as being comprised of OVERLAPPING triangles, just as the Seal of Solomon (Solomon's Seal) must always have the appearance of INTERLACED (or INTERWOVEN) triangles instead. The actual, factual, historically correct, dictionary definitions of these two emblems are listed below:

(Star of David) n. - A symbol consisting of two OVERLAPPED equilateral triangles forming a star with six points, used as a symbol of Judaism. It is also called Magen David, Mogen David, and Shield of David, and is shaped identically to the hexagram and Solomon's seal. It is used on the flag of the modern state of Israel.

- Collaborative International Dictionary of English, Dictionary.net

(Solomon's Seal) n. - A mystic symbol consisting of two INTERLACED triangles forming a star with six points, often with one triangle dark and one light, symbolic of the union of soul and body. It is shaped identically to the hexagram and Star of David, distinguished only in its usage.

- Collaborative International Dictionary of English, Dictionary.net
______________________________________________

Among the various myths and legends concerning this age-old Biblical symbol, two of them stand out in particular. The first one concerns the reasons behind why the hexagram was ever called a star (or shield), while the second story explains the intricate three-dimensional pattern seen on the Seal of Solomon, but
A Jewish Seal of Solomon (200-400 A.D.)
usually never with the Star of David. Now as to why the hexagram was ever called a Star, the main reason should be quite obvious to most observers. As nearly everybody would agree, the six-pointed shape itself bears a striking visual resemblance to the twinkling effect one experiences when looking directly at either a star, or the sun, through a somewhat hazy atmosphere.

Twinkle (Upward Triangle), Twinkle (Downward Triangle) little star, how I wonder what you are (Star of David). Up above the world so high (Upward Triangle), like a diamond in the sky (Downward Triangle)...

- An interpretation of the song 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star'
______________________________________________

There is also a Biblical reason why the hexagram has been called a star and it concerns a certain, obscure prophecy found in the Book of Numbers. Keeping in mind that this was written long before King David was ever born, the relevant verse talks about an unknown future leader of Israel who will rise to power and go on to defeat the traditional enemies of the Israelites- the Moabites for example. This future hero is metaphorically described as 'a Star' which 'shall come forth from Jacob', obviously meaning a yet-to-born descendant from the one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Because of the importance of the Davidic Kingdom, quite a few scholars claim this passage from Numbers should be seen as a direct reference to the later military success and subsequent rule of King David. Indeed, David official founding of the Kingdom of Israel in Jerusalem was the first event of extreme significance which had occurred in Israel since the time period recorded in the Book of Numbers.

Yet the question remains as to why the hexagram, rather than David himself, is the 'Star' mentioned in Scriptures. The best, and probably only correct answer to this is that the original Star of David served as his personalized signature- comprised of two triangular Hebrew letters written on top of each other with one of them turned upside down. In short, the hexagram was simply a uniquely clever way David wrote the first and last initials to his own name. Therefore, the claim that the six-pointed hexagram used for David's name was also a perfect symbolic representation of the Biblically prophesied 'Star' of 'Jacob' happens to be fairly logical, at least in a metaphorical sense. Also, because the Bible just so happens to be filled to the brim with metaphors, this legendary explanation may indeed be the real truth behind the origins of the six-pointed Star.

STAR OF DAVID: I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A STAR shall come forth from Jacob. A scepter shall rise from Israel and shall crush the corners of Moab, and destroy all the sons of Sheth.

- Numbers 24:17

SEAL OF SOLOMON: Place me like a SEAL upon your heart, like a SEAL on your arm. For love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame.

- Song of Solomon 8:6

A Christian Seal of Solomon (400-600 A.D.)
Now it is time to turn to the Judeo/Christian legends surrounding the Seal of Solomon and the reason behind the change in name. First, as previously mentioned, the more complex looking six-pointed star with interwoven triangles was Solomon's way of improving upon his father David's original design for their family coat-of-arms. This three-dimensional hexagram was also a far more appropriate insignia for a King of Israel and his Royal family to have as their personal seal. Even so, there was also a deeper, more profound reason behind the interwoven appearance of the Seal of Solomon's two interlaced triangles. Apparently, this specific design served as a visual talisman providing spiritual protection and control against the forces of evil. Not only was the Seal thought to ward against, or scare off, demons and other evil spirits, it also helped to trap, contain, and control them- thus rendering them harmless to mere mortals. To truly understand how and why this worked, notice how the Seal's interlaced lines have an eerie, maze-like appearance to them, going back and forth, above and behind each other, in a ceaseless, never-ending pattern. This infinite sense of complexity was said to cause disorientation and utter confusion in any demon who dared to look directly at the symbol. More than two thousand years later, the Medieval Christians (as well as Jews) also put their trust in the Seal of Solomon, believing it provided ample protection from the forces of darkness. Three different online sources confirm the 'magical' history of this symbol:

The hexagram, as the Seal of Solomon, is generally...believed to have protective powers and magical properties...[It] has a long history of providing protection from demons and evil spirits. In some magical practices, it is associated with exorcisms.

- Who Knew Two Triangles Could Do So Much?: The Hexagram, by Rebecca, themagicalbuffet.com

The Seal of Solomon dates back to the Bronze Ages and is a powerful symbol with many mystical and magickal qualities...the Seal of Solomon is believed to offer protection against both enemies and the evil eye, control spirits, and bring good luck in all aspects of life.

- Seal of Solomon, Amulet Power, Angelfire.com

An Islamic Seal of Solomon (750–1258 A.D.)

In the middle Ages it was common to find amulets and talismans which reproduced the Seal of Solomon...It was believed that these magic drawings protected the wearer from the influence of demons and evil spirits, or just bad luck. It was also common to record the seal on a frame or lintel of the entrance door to homes...with the same protective character against the spirits or to potential fires.

- The Hexagram, Star of David or Seal of Solomon, Looking4thetruth77.blogspot.com
______________________________________________

One might apt to conclude that both the form and function of the Seal of Solomon were in perfectly alignment, thus explaining the legendary spiritual powers this symbol was believed to possess. These days, Christians (and Jews) are free to choose to believe or disbelieve in its significance, yet even today, in the 21st century, the Seal's actual power over the minds of men (and women) has yet to disappear completely. Indeed, look at the dozens and dozens, perhaps even hundreds, if not thousands, of modern, educated adults who still use this symbol to practice magic and/or witchcraft. Even if one doesn't believe in any magic whatsoever, there still has to be a reason why so many fellow humans have such an on-going obsession with this one particular geometric shape. as if by its very appearance the supernatural will then become possible. A more balanced view concerning the power of the Star of David/Seal of Solomon can be found in the Catholic Church of today. Mentioning the Star of David by name, it reads as follows:

The Papal Hexagram on top of the Pope's head is actually a Seal of Solomon
The magi's coming to Jerusalem in order to pay homage to the king of the Jews shows that they seek in Israel, in the messianic light of the STAR OF DAVID, the one who will be king of the nations. Their coming means that pagans can discover Jesus and worship him as Son of God and Savior of the world only by turning towards the Jews and receiving from them the messianic promise as contained in the Old Testament.

- Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church
______________________________________________

In conclusion, the actual history of the hexagram in terms of the Judeo/Christian tradition indicates a fairly long and extensive history of Christian use. Hopefully, Christian respect and admiration for this particular emblem will extend itself into an open friendliness, rather than hostility, towards those who still practice and believe in Judaism, This seems to be the general attitude of today's Catholic Church and the Pope's recent appearance with a Star of David on top of his head and the direct reference to 'THE STAR OF DAVID' in the recently updated Catechism of the Catholic Church, which serve as an official set of doctrines all Catholics are expected to believe in and obey, is simply further proof that times have changed for the better.

Blue Water + Red Fire = The Star of David in Black and White

Both triangles put together creates a Star of David (also called the Seal of Solomon, Star of Creation, Star of Mary, and a Hexagram), thus visually representing God's creation as it has always appeared to mankind, a world of Valleys and Mountains, the pyramidal structure of the flames in a Fire (Upward pointing Triangle) and the constant directional flow of Water (Downward pointing Triangle), the ground 'Down Below' made of Earth (Downward Triangle) and the skies 'Up Above' filled with Air (Upward Triangle).

The Earth down below and the Air up above, just as Water flows down while Fire rises up.

A Judeo/Christian Understanding of 'Down in the Valley' Below and 'Up on the Mountain' Above'

Phrases found repeatedly in Bibles translated into English

IKON ON THE LEFT: 'The priests of the true God...took away the fire from the altar, and hid it Down In the Valley, in a pit both deep and dry' (II Maccabees 1:19)
IKON ON THE RIGHT: 'Jesus took along Peter and John and James, and went Up On The Mountain to pray' (Luke 9:28)

- The Biblical passage included with the Downward Pointing Pyramid on the left refers to the concealment and preservation of the sacred fire used in the ritual offerings of animals to the LORD as described in the Five Books of Moses
- The Upward Pointing Pyramid on the right describes events just prior to the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ when the ghosts of Elijah and Moses appear and converse with Him ending with all three begin shining with white light
- Both triangles put together creates a Star of David (also Seal of Solomon, Star of Creation, Star of Mary, Hexagram), thus visually representing God's creation as it has always appeared to mankind, a world of Valleys and Mountains, the pyramidal structure of the flames in a Fire (Upward pointing Triangle) and constant directional flow of Water (Downward pointing Triangle), the ground below made up of Earth (Downward Triangle) and the skies above filled with Air (Upright Triangle).

The Full 'Valley/Mountain' References in the Bible

Long ago, when our Fathers were being carried off into the Persian country, the priests of the true God who held office in those days took away the fire from the altar, and hid it Down In the Valley, in a pit both deep and dry, so well guarding their secret so well that none knew where it was to be found.

- II Maccabees 1:19 (Knox Bible)

Some eight days after these sayings, Jesus took along Peter and John and James, and went Up On The Mountain to pray.

All about the Cross of St. Peter

The stone the builders rejected has become the Cornerstone. By the LORD this has been done and it is wonderful in our eyes.

- Psalm 118:22-23

The All-Seeing Eye of St. Peter or, even better, St. Peter's Eye of the Pyramid

Understanding the Christian Cross Turned Upside Down

I beseech you the executioners, crucify me thus, with [my] head downward and not otherwise, and the reason wherefore, I will tell unto them that hear.

- The Acts of Peter, XXXVII

Visually speaking, the Cross of St. Peter is nothing more than a plain, empty cross turned upside down, or 'an inverted Latin cross'. This has been understood by Catholic Christian for nearly 2,000 years and counting, Yet, for whatever reason, an alarming number of Protestants have thrown some rather embarrassing hysterical fits over the Church's continued use of this ancient personal emblem of Saint Peter, the Rock upon which Jesus intended to build His Church.

I tell you that you are Peter, and on this Rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell will not prevail against it.

- Matthew 16:18

Not withstanding the 'Christian' cry-babies just mentioned, this unique form of Christian Cross continues to be the official symbol of Saint Peter, the Prince of the Apostles. One of the more traditional names for this symbol is the 'Petrine Cross' or, in English, St. Peter's Cross for short. Regardless of any recent Hollywood portrayals of this ikon as 'evil' or 'Satanic' in meaning, the fact remains that the Cross of St. Peter's has, throughout the centuries, always been known to be a authentically Christian symbol. This has continued to be case for all Christian (both Catholic and Protestant), until just recently. One source makes note of this change in the meaning of the symbol:

St Peter's Cross is an inverted cross often associated with Satanism. According to popular belief, the cross is a symbol of inverted grace, or falling away from Christ's grace. However the origins of this little known Christagram is that it represents the legend that states St Peter was crucified upside down, as he felt he was unworthy to be crucified in the same manner that Christ died (upright). It is often used with two keys, symbolizing the keys of Heaven.

The Alexandrian Biblical scholar, and Church Father, named Origen was one of the first to make reference to St. Peter's Cross by noting that, at the time of his crucifixion by Caesar Nero, Peter 'was crucified head downward, for he had asked that he might suffer in this way'. This, in the simplest, most elegant terms possible, describes the 'little known Catholic tradition of Peter's death.' Until just recently nearly all Catholics learned and were taught to look upon this particular 'cross as a symbol of humility and unworthiness in comparison to Christ.' The Church maintains that Saint Peter did this to differentiate from his leader and personal friend, Jesus Christ, who was indeed crucified upright. The reasons for this are as follows:

It is believed that Peter requested this form of crucifixion as he felt he was unworthy to be crucified in the same manner that Christ died (upright). As such, some Catholics use this cross as a symbol of humility and unworthiness in comparison to Christ.

The Two Keys Symbol on the Right is sometimes used in conjunction with St. Peter's Cross
According to long-standing Roman Catholic tradition, the Pope has always been seen as St. Peter's direct successor as the Bishop of Rome. Because of this, the Papacy is often represented by the Cross of St. Peter, which may sometimes be iconographically combined with the more familiar 'Keys to Heaven' symbol. In fact, 'during Pope John Paul II's visit to Israel, he sat on a chair with the Cross of Peter cut into the back'. Due to the publication of certain photos in the media clearly showing St. Peter's Cross, this single act and subsequent Protestant uproar over the 'Satanic' significance of the event, was plastered all over the internet. Once again the cry-babies had a temper tantrum, which was pointedly by official Roman Catholic Church authorities. Readers should take note that this same symbol may also seen in Eastern Orthodox Christianity and is 'used by Petrine Orthodox Sebomenoi'.

In modern times, most especially the latter half of the 20th century, this very genuine and authentic Christian symbol of Saint Peter is now being seen, by an tragically increasing amount of people, as a symbolic representation of 'evil'. Sad to say, things have gotten so bad that a single online media photo of Pope John Paul II 'with a backdrop of St Peter's cross went viral quite quickly and has been been blamed for propagating an outrageously absurd belief about the Catholic Church's 'association with Satanism.'. Wikipedia summarizes this recent change in understanding about this historically harmless and docile Christian Cross turned 'Upside Down':

[St. Peter's Cross] has also often become associated with Satanism and anti-religious attitudes, as it is considered to represent the opposite of Christianity by inverting its primary symbol, the Latin Cross. As a result, this symbol has become very popular within anti-religion groups and among some black metal musicians. In films such as The Exorcism of Emily Rose and The Omen, Petrine Crosses are displayed to represent Satan.

The Many, Different Varieties of St. Peter's Crosses on Display

Keep in mind, of course, that 'in Roman Catholicism the Petrine Cross is NOT seen as Satanic in any way.' Admittedly, there some credence to the claim that, even though a inverted Cross is okay, an inverted Crucifix has usually been 'seen as immensely disrespectful, and could be used to represent Satanic forces.' This mainly irrelevant fact has caused at least some observers to smugly conclude the difference 'between a Cross of Peter and upturned Crucifix [has been] sometimes obscured'.

As of now, the mainstream explanation about the uproar contends this subtle, yet essential, difference between an inverted Cross (St. Peter's Cross) and an inverted Crucifix is the primary culprit in the current misunderstanding. As such, the innate similarities between a Cross and a Crucifix must have inevitably lead to quite a lot of 'confusion about the acceptability of each symbol.' While this conclusion tends to please those seeking to avoid any controversy, it still seems a bit simplistic considering the fact that more than a few Protestants still view the exclusively Catholic symbol of the Crucifix as a form of 'evil' idolatry, regardless of whether it is turned right-side up or upside down.

Considering the continued success and influence of Roman Catholic Christianity around the world today (with 1+ billion baptized member and counting), one can safely ignore the continued, exclusively American (Protestant) fixation and hysteria over the age-old symbol of the Cross of St. Peter. Even so, the Church should at least take the time to promote the Christian truth that the inverted cross represents the Rock which is Saint Simon Peter, the one and only Jewish Papa (Pope) of every Catholic from every ethnicity in every country on this planet.

Many know Peter was a simple fisherman, but they forget he was also a full-blooded, God-fearing Jew
As the science-based population statistics clearly indicate, the future is still Saint Peter's, not Martin Luther's, just as his version of the Cross still is, and will continue to be, the exact opposite of the Cross belonging to his LORD and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Therefore, let the truth be known to all who will read and listen by proclaiming it loudly and clearly throughout the internet. Tell everyone the objective facts about how the inverted Cross has not, is not, and will never be a Satanic symbol. Then tell even more that this symbol is actually called the Cross of St. Peter, and long after this great country has vanished from the face of the Earth, it will continue to be turned upside down, both now and forevermore.

Logically speaking, this would be the Flag of St. Peter's United States of America, or less formally called St. Peter's American Flag

...and the Gates of Hell will not prevail against it.

- Matthew 16:18

One thing that must be said about the legacy of the King James Bible (1611) is that, ever since that time, a certain number of its readers seem to have been rendered permanently incapable of telling heads from tails, or in this case, of understanding the crucial difference between Capstones Above and Cornerstones Below.

Now once again, for the last time (yeah right!), the Eye of the Pyramid, or more specifically, the Eye Above the Pyramid is simply NOT a Cornerstone. By its very definition, this symbol cannot and does not represent a Cornerstone. Why? Well, obviously if the pyramid in the picture were real, then it must have been built from the Bottom up, culminating in the unfinished portion at the very Top of the structure (where the Eye floats weightlessly above the actual building. Thus, because of gravity itself, the section of the pyramid where the Eye resides MUST have been built LAST, not first or second, but LAST of all.

Therefore, by the centuries-old, well understood definition of the word itself, this can never be called a Cornerstone because Cornerstones must be placed at the very beginning of construction, usually very near the foundations, or base, of a building. Any stone used later on, or near the end, cannot and should not ever be designated as a Cornerstone because they are not Cornerstones at all, but another type of stone altogether.

In contrast to this, a stone placed during the final stages of construction, nearly always somewhere close to the Top of a building are, according to multiple Dictionaries and Encyclopedias, called a 'Capstone'. In addition, they are called 'Capstones' even if they are placed at, or near, the corner of a structure- just like where the Eye of the Pyramid happens to be located.

In all honesty, one can partially sympathize with those who see that the top of the Pyramid (or any pyramid for that matter) ends in a corner where all four sides meet at a single point.  As the flaw in logic goes- 'the Eye atop the unfinished Pyramid sits directly on the corner, therefore this must represent a Corner+stone'. Unfortunately, those who think this way tend to remain unaware that the term 'Corner' in Cornerstone must have originally been in reference to the 'Corner' where a building begins (Below), rather than where it ends (Above).

Like it says right on the Picture, Only the Upside Down Eye of the Pyramid Upside Down could possibly be 'The Cornerstone'

A much easier way to think of the fundamental Capstone/Cornerstone differences is to remember that, like a 'Cap' on any bottle, can, or other container, which just so happens to be situated at the Top, and never the Bottom, a Capstone is Above, and never Below. That is where the Cornerstone is located. In short, Cap = Top/Above while Corner = NOT the Corner at the Top of the Pyramid. Simple enough? Good, even though it is an absolute given this same question will be raised once again. As they exclaim in Yiddish: 'Oh Vey!' Until then, God bless, Shalom, and have a nice day.

'Caps' are at the Top of a Bottle, 'Corners' are where the Gears are on a Throttle

What Exactly does the Bible Mean by the Word 'Cornerstone'?

No matter how many search engines one uses, no matter how many libraries one visits, no matter how many Forums one asks, the question always seems to remain the same: What is the Bible trying to say when it uses the word 'Cornerstone'. It's just another Rock for Heaven's sake, and Jesus was a wood carpenter anyway. Those goofy Freemasons with their absurd and ridiculous rites and rituals aren't going to be any help either. Half of them still think that Cornerstone and a Capstone MEAN THE SAME THING!

As the somewhat disgusting American saying goes, Bible scholars and other related experts need to get their heads out of their b-tts, or more precisely- they need to get their Capstones out their Cornerstones and figure out this Biblical mystery once and for all. Until then, it's time for yet another 'as the Bible states...'
